baRUNGA FESTIVAl, NT

GET LOST MAGAZINE & NORTHERN TERRITORY TOURISM

The Barunga cultural festival is held each year in a small community about an hour’s drive from Katherine NT. The town’s population grows by a whopping 1000% every June as different mobs gather from around the country. The Barunga Statement, if you’re not in the know, is an historic document signed by then Prime Minister Bob Hawke at the 1988 Barunga Festival. The statement calls for a recognition of land rights, self-determination and a Treaty between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. This year commemorates 35 years since the signing.
